Seoul can be an overwhelming experience for its first-time visitors. Its size enormous, the language a challenge, a lingering jetlag, and then there’s a city that immediately demands your attention. How to navigate, where to go, what to eat, and how to see it all?

Speaking from my own experience of traveling to and living in Seoul - an experience that goes back almost 15 years now - the city is great to explore on foot. Yes, it’s too big to explore only on foot, but once we get off the metro, bus or taxi, all of Seoul’s true charm lies waiting to be discovered by walking. There’s the Han River and its hundreds of kilometers of bicycle and pedestrian paths, the countless parks boasting a different color every season, historic landmarks, vibrant markets, and neighbourhoods each with their own character, to name only a few reasons.

In need of an escape from the busy city center, or simply a lover of forest and mountain, or curious about the Korean mountain spirit, 산신 (san-sin) and its importance in folklore? Those mountains that loom in our vision when we walk the city, the ones behind the palaces, are all easily accessible by public transport too. The trails all neatly maintained in characteristic Korean manner, sufficient facilities available for the tired, hungry hiker in need of a drink, a toilet, or a large lunch.

I walk this city every day. Where others go right, I often take a left turn. Not to avoid people—a sheer impossible task in Seoul—but rather to find those lesser explored area’s, markets, hidden gems. To find the stories that made and make this city. Stories that are everywhere but may be difficult to find upon first arrival. And therefore, I’m here to offer a helping hand. Let me take you for a walk, and join me on the never-ending journey that is Seoul on Foot.

Your personalized Seoul walking adventure

  • Jitse took us through the Euljiro industrial area and Changsin-dong (sewing and fashion district) and this is exactly how I wish to experience a culture or city; by seeing and understanding its people and its daily life. It was all very informative and I came back with much more insight of Korea and Koreans.

A tall Dutch guy on itself already invites smalltalk and interaction, and the added value is the tall guy speaks a bit of Korean.

    Totally recommend!

  • My experience with Seoul was really amazing thanks to Jitse!

When I went to Seoul, I had a lot of questions about this beautiful country and the best way to learn about a country is talking to locals. Jitse absorbed everything there is to know about the country, the history, the people, the food and all the curiosities in the country! So I could ask all my questions. He took us on several walks with amazing views and provided us with extra tips to go to.

I would not hesitate a second to meet him again if I were to go to Seoul again. Thanks Jitse!

  • I have had the pleasure of meeting Jitse by a funny coincidence of having read his article in the KLM magazine just prior to travelling to Seoul. He is a Dutchman living in Seoul with a great passion for the city. This shows!

We have had an incredible time on our tailored tour where we ventured off the prescribed paths normally used by tourists. We saw the real Seoul, and things we would have otherwise never seen. We learned a lot about the city and its people.

Jitse has a Korean wife and is strongly connected with the Korean people. He has many funny and interesting stories to share. I can recommend Jitse's tours to anybody and will definitely hit him up again the next time I am visiting Seoul.
